Immunization Requirements

vaccination

Starting in the 2014/15 school year, three additional vaccines will be required for students to attend school.  Requirements align with the Publicly Funded Immunization Schedule for Ontario and are based on year of birth.  Provincial laws mandate that all students enrolled in school must have proof of immunization to specific diseases unless a valid exemption is in place.  These vaccines have been part of the routine vaccination schedule, therefore most students will already have received them.

1.  Meningococcal Vaccine
*Meningococcal type C vaccine
:  required for students born on or after September 1, 2004 and under 12 years of age.  This vaccine has been provided to children of one year since 2004.

*Meningococcal type A, C, Y, W-135
:  required for students born on or after January 1, 1997 and 12 years of age or older.  This vaccine has been provided to Grade 7 students since September 2009.  This vaccine will be offered to the Grade 7 students at school in the fall.  A consent form will be sent home in September.

  2.
Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Vaccine
*This vaccine is provided in a combined Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio and Haemophilus Influenza B vaccine at two, four, six and eighteen months of age and again with Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio at 4-6 years of age.  A booster dose of Pertussis is provided with Tetanus and Diphtheria vaccine during adolescence, usually at 14-16 years of age.

3.
Varicella (Chicken Pox) Vaccine
*This vaccine is provided at 15 months of age and since 2011 again at 4-6 years of age.  All students born on or after January 1, 2010 must have two doses of this vaccine or physician-documented immunity of having the Chicken Pox disease.

Please report new immunizations to Public Health as updates are not routinely sent from your physician's office.  If you have any questions regarding your child's immunization record, please contact Public Health.  If your child needs to be immunized and you don't have a health care provider please call Public Health to make an appointment.
